Slot Rankings - How Wide Receivers Score More Touchdowns in the Slot

Slots are the same for each spin. You won't find any tricks that can assist you in beating them. However there are a few things to keep in mind to maximize your winnings.

Slot Efficiency

The goal of slot efficiency is to maximize the number of slot changes that can be made without violating the constraints of a set of pre-defined rules. Items with the highest speed are allocated the top exciting slots in the warehouse, while those with lower speeds are placed further behind.

The bottom half of the list was populated with more possession-based receivers including Chris Godwin and Diontae Johnson. The Bucs are likely to move the two latter players into the slot more often during this season, which could increase their targets. However, they'll need to improve their scoring on the perimeter in order to maintain their top-of-the-line performance.

Speedy wideouts are the main benefits of moving into the slot, as they typically have a much easier time getting open in the field when their route isn't covered by a linebacker or cornerback. The only non-speedy wide receiver on the list who benefits from more slot work is Corey Coleman, as he's an extremely reliable receiver on intermediate and short routes.

Jerry Jeudy, KJ Hamler and other possession-based receivers are at the lowest of the list. They're more effective on intermediate and short routes, rather than in deep areas. Jeudy is a solid option to be a sleeper for this season since the Rams' primary slot receiver for the Rams while Courtland Sutton and Amari Cooper are likely to be involved in more downfield targets. Hamler is expected to thrive on more short-to-middle and intermediate routes, as that's where he excelled while playing for the Bills in 2021. Hamler could be a great replacement for the departing wideout Jordan Matthews in Buffalo.

Percentage of Snaps In Slot

The percentage of snaps that a receiver makes in the slot could be a good indicator for their ability to run deep routes. However, it's not always a true representation of a receiver's skills as certain receivers excel in the slot, but can't play deep and vice versa.

Alshon Jeffrey, for instance is the league leader in goals per game (4.8) however, he is only ranked 6th when it comes to the position that scores (58.5). This is due to the fact that the majority of his targets have come from the outside and it's hard to gain a first down in a wide-open deep line in that situation.

On contrary, some receivers excel inside, but struggle on the outside. Robby Anderson, for instance was given 978 snaps by the Panthers this season. He completed 74% of his route in the slot, compared to only 26% on boundaries routes. This is a huge distinction and demonstrates how much more efficient Robby Anderson is when aligned to the slot.

Moreover it is worth noting that the Buccaneers' Chris Godwin lines up inside on most of his passing downs and has a top five slot receiving score (58.5). He also played 51% of his perimeter routes and is a pro in one-on-1 coverage.

Speed receivers are usually more efficient when they line up inside, since they are able to get targeted down the field and often are in one-on-one coverage. This is why you'll find names like Julio Jones, Mike Evans and Amari Cooper on the top five spots of our list.

On the flip side, we've got some great slot cornerbacks like McDuffie and Moore in this group. McDuffie leads the NFL in forced fumbles having seven, while Moore has the highest tackle-stop performance (-3.5) on this list. Through using McDuffie in the slot when they run nickel or dime-type packages, and then deploying him on the outside in base defense, Spagnuolo has maximized his abilities. Moore's ability in stopping big run plays is a huge benefit when playing the slot.

Percentage of Snaps Outside

While the NFL's top receivers such as Baldwin, Golden Tate and Larry Fitzgerald excel on the perimeter, it's important to note that their slot counterparts are just as good. Wide receivers who have high slot grades have touchdowns that are about the same as those on the perimeter. This is due to the fact that quarterbacks have a more stable target distribution when throwing to slot and outside receivers compared to other inside options such as tight ends and backfield pass-catchers.

It's interesting to see a receiver like CeeDee lamb on this list for 2022. He plays the slot in 3 WR sets and flanker in two of them. He's actually running more routes in the slot than many of the players listed on this chart. This is a great way to create matchup benefits for your team and clarify why Lamb is the highest-rated slot receiver in our system this season.

Of course, he plays the X position and makes big plays on the perimeter, too. Lamb isn't as awe-inspiring as the players in this list however, he's a very high-graded receiver and is a great match for the Cowboys' scheme.

Mecole Hardman is yet another example of a player capable of putting up huge numbers on both kinds of targets. He has a very high slot receiver grade and is among the best players in the league at catching back-shoulder throws, but he's also an excellent contested-catch threat.

Another player on this list who's a slot specialist in the true sense is Baltimore's Jalen Hilton, who has lined up in the slot on 85.7 percent of his defensive plays this season. He has the third-lowest EPA for targets and the fifth-best EPA for run stops among cornerbacks in the slot. This makes him a key player in the defensive line. On the other hand, he's had trouble to block passes from the outside and has allowed the negative EPA against these kinds of targets. This is the result of playing with unsafe linebackers who aren't able to match Hilton's size and speed. He also has a great ability to run routes.
