Buying a Double Buggy From Birth

There are plenty of things to consider when selecting the ideal double buggy right from birth. We spoke with Fourth Trimester postnatal retreat expert Katie Billingsley for her advice on everything from seating options, age ranges to folding mechanisms and storage space.

This buggy is an essential item for active families. It will grow with you and your family, from twins to toddlers. It's lightweight Twin buggy and has great maneuverability and can tackle difficult terrain with ease.

What type of buggy do you want?

A double buggy is great for transporting two children, but not necessarily of the same age, side-by-side. They can also be used as prams and come with recline mechanisms in each seat so your children can sit or lay down in various positions. They're often spacious enough to store everything from drinks and snacks to wipes and nappies. Often they're lightweight, fold easily and are small enough to fit into your car boot. Lastly there are the'single-to-double' convertibles which can be used as a single pushchair from birth then convert to a double by attaching a second seat, carrycot or car seat to their clever frame. They are generally more expensive than side-by-sides and tandem buggies but provide plenty of versatility and a good price for resales. They're generally easy to steer, have an enormous storage basket and can handle uneven surfaces. Some models come with a built-in ride-on boards for older children and 'cinema chairs'.

Do you have twins?

Whether your children are twins or siblings of different age groups, a double buggy is the best way to transport them around. There are two kinds of double buggy - side-by-side buggies where your children sit together, and tandem buggies where one child is placed above the other. Both buggies can be fitted with two fixed seats. However side-by-side buggies tend to be narrower to fit through doors. Tandems are typically wider overall. They can also be able to accommodate seats for toddlers and a carrycot.

Do you have children?

At first the idea of having a younger sibling can feel like an overwhelming amount of responsibility, particularly if you're also caring for the infant. A double buggy may help children to feel included when you put them in an infant carrier and push the older child. It will also provide your child with the feeling of pride that comes with knowing that they are able to be "big brother or sister" and help them get used to their role.
