The iRobot Roomba 980, the most recent in a line of top-of the-line robot vacuum cleaner for pet hair vacuums, is a must for any modern home. This model comes with a HEPA filter that can aid those suffering from allergies. On top of that it comes with a powerful battery which can clean for up to two hours, and it will return to its dock once its bin is full.

It also comes with an option called smart mapping which uses multiple sensors to identify the areas of your home that need attention and then create a clean route around them. We've seen this technology in action and it does an excellent job of maneuvering around toys that are abandoned on the floor, or furniture legs that are sticking out from under the furniture. It also has a camera that snaps the Roomba back to the real world when it starts drifting away from its original location.

iRobot has also introduced a new set of rollers beneath the Roomba's bottom that don't have bristles and therefore tend to resist tangles more than earlier models. These rollers are also taller and can be placed under beds or couches with low sides. They're designed to make this model more maneuverable on different kinds of floors.

The Roomba 980 is distinguished from other models with a high-end price tag due to its latest dirt detection feature that makes use of cameras to identify dirt that has been embedded. This is a significant improvement over the previous model that relied on a sensor-driven pseudorandom cover method to bounce around the room and clean everything three times at different angles.

The Roomba 980 performed well in our tests on carpets and hard floors. Its score on low pile carpet was excellent and it got a very good score on mid pile, too. It did a fair job of removing pet hair, but it had a difficult time with very thick and best Affordable robot vacuum long pet fur that was stuck together.

The Roomba 980 is still one of the best affordable robot vacuum performing robots in our list, best Affordable robot vacuum despite these minor limitations. It's also not as expensive as top-of-the-line models. It still has a lot of features we'd expect to see in a flagship model, but it doesn't have all the fancy app-enabled functions or smart home integration that you'll find in other top contenders.

The iRobot Roomba can be set up quickly and is ready to use immediately. After taking the yellow bin insert and battery pull tab from the undercarriage, you just plug it into an outlet on the wall or to its Home Base docking stations, press the "Clean button" and let it job. It will return to the dock when it runs out of batteries or is full of debris. There are also indicator lights on top that show when the bin is empty, when it needs to recharge, or when it loses its Wi-Fi.
