How to Replace an audi a1 key Replacement Key Fob (Wiki.Vst.Hs-Furtwangen.De) G28 Engine Speed Sensor

In this video, Charles the humble mechanic demonstrates how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. The sensor is located on the edge of the transmission just above the flywheel ring gear. It sends a message to the ECU through an uncolored wire T55/49, then to the tachometer on the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The grey wire is located on the edge of transmission, directly above the flywheel ring. This sensor sends an electrical signal through the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU utilizes this information to control the amount of fuel and boost. It also sends a signal to the G5 tachometer inside the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used to correlate with the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu must be aware of when the crankshaft has reached TDC, and the position of the camshaft, in order to activate the spark and injectors.

If this sensor fails the ECU will throw a P00160 code which means the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft are out of sync, possibly indicating the chain is stretched or a jump link on the upper timing chain. However, the code won't be displayed on its own without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).

Testing is a bit challenging because there are two pins for the connector and they have different functions but the best method of testing it is to measure the resistance between the sensor and the ECU. It should read about 1000 ohms if the sensor is in full operation. If you're having issues with this component, look for evidence of oil or coolant in the connector bay.

2. Injectors

Yesterday accelerating full speed from highway paytoll i had an abrupt drop in power like the engine is running out of gas or injectors aren't firing anymore. I took out the spark plugs this morning, 3 were soaked with gasoline and the fourth was unclean. When i crank the engine without sparks i put tissue on top of each injector hole and the 3 drenched with gazoline jump out but the 4th stay shut. I tried to test the ground connections of ECU pins 14,30 and 48/55. I found zero ohm. I think the issue is somewhere else.

I also tried to reset the PID with no success. The car key cover audi can start when the G28 is not plugged in and is running fine when it is plugged in, but still has intermittent misfire issues at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62), even when unplugged, still shows temperatures of -49c. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bars but the actual pressure is 0.

I'm not sure what to do. I feel like i've pretty much all other possibilities out. I'm concerned that i may have missed something. If anyone has any suggestions, please let me know! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump in the g28 is activated by a signal by the RPM sensor. The GM-style sensor is the same as the G4 and both function in the 80, 100 200, UrS and RS2 cars which is why you can easily locate one at a wrecking yard or in a local parts store. Testing them is easy by putting your DMM in resistance mode and measure the resistance between pins 1 (with the bump on the connector end up) and 2 (2nd from left on the black connector's end). They should be infinite Ohms.

4. ECU

Our 20vt turbo (3B AAN, ABY and ADU) engines are equipped with an ECU that must know the position and speed of the crankshaft to make decisions regarding fuel injector timing etc. To accomplish this, it uses a Crank Position Sensor (G4) and an Engine Speed Sensor (G28). If you have a problem with either of these sensors, the diagnostic scanner will display codes that could lead to the engine shutting down.

The signs of a failed G28 sensor include an inaccurate gearbox rev counter and gears that shift faster than normal, and/or a misfire when you are in gear. It is possible that the sensor is failing and requires to be replaced if you experience any of these signs. The good news is that they are very cheap and easily accessible particularly in the case of a Bosch sensor, which is what ours are. You can also choose the GM version of this part is also a good option.

5. Tachometer

A failing engine sensor could cause a myriad of issues within your vehicle. It's an essential component of the transmission in your audi keys because it relays information to the ECU on how fast or slowly the car's engine is turning. This sensor can cause the transmission to fail and other components of the car to be affected.

The G5 engine speed sensor is located on the edge of the transmission above the flywheel ring gear. It sends a signal directly to the ECU at pin T55/49, via a grey wire. The ECU then processes this signal to control fuel, timig and boost as well as transmitting it to the G5 tachometer inside the instrument cluster. You can test the sensor for failure by checking continuity between it and the tachometer, between ECU pin T55/49 and the instrument cluster connection to pin T6a/1 (trace [79trace [79]) and between T6a/1 and the instrument cluster pin T26a/12. You should see approximately 1000 ohms resistance between those points. This is a common part that is found across the Audi 80 100, 200, UrS and RS2 range from 1985 MC to the 1997 UrS AAN and 1995 RS2 ADU so good parts could be found in wrecking yards.
