Joseph Williams, the son of John Williams, the legendary film composer and actress Barbara Ruick from 1950s, replaces Fergie Frederiksen as lead vocalist. Joseph Williams is a natural frontman, and provides the band with a much-needed boost.

The band releases Mindfields in 1999, and then embarks on a major tour across the globe. After a few months in Europe they travel to Japan where the shows are sold out. After a short break, Toto resumes recording and begins recording their first live album titled Absolutely Live in 1993 which includes a cover of Weezer's song Hash Pipe in response to the band's cover of their hit Africa during a recent tour. Toto's touring band includes drummer Lenny Castro and bassist Shannon Forrest along with keyboardist Shem Von Schroeck.
