Three Wheeled Buggies

Whether you're looking for a buggy run around in or a compact stroller for neighbourhood walks, three wheeled buggies offer great mobility. Their compact design makes them easy to maneuver even in tight places.

Frame made of sturdy material

New data show that three-wheeled buggies that were the symbol of the noughties that had more money than common sense, are in rapid decline. Four-wheelers are replacing them, and are more versatile and easy to drive, while also looking fashionable.

The rule is that the bigger the wheels are, the easier it'll be for your buggy to deal with bumpy and rough pavements. With larger wheels front and back makes it easier to manoeuvre and more stable when walking downhill or over difficult terrain.

MFM reviewer Kath tried the buggy with a newborn and a 3 year old and found it was able to withstand grass, cobbles rough roads, dirt tracks, and kerbs. Kath wrote "it is solid to push and very solid when going over difficult terrain. Its tyres (which are inflatable so need occasionally pumping) have suspension built-in which was extremely comfortable for my kids.

The size and shape of the seat is another thing to think about. The seat should be large enough to allow your child to be comfortable and allow them to lie down. Some three-wheel buggies offer the option of lying flat, which lets your child face you, while other buggies only allow a face-to-parent one.

A great option for those who want to tackle off-road or muddy walks is the Roma Atlas. This buggy can be used as a single from birth, and then expands to take two children when your family grows. It is suitable for infants and toddlers until age 4 and includes a bumper bar, raincover, improved 5-point harness, and a large cushioned seat. The storage options are good as well, with a decent-sized basket, zip pockets inside the hood and an attractive pouch at the rear of the seat unit.

Larger wheels

Larger wheels will give your buggy more stability when driving over rough terrain. This is especially beneficial for off-road buggies. They also allow you to move the pushchair around tight spaces. Certain three-wheeled buggies have rotating wheels at the front to assist you in navigating tight corners. Others are designed to run and have fixed wheels that lock to provide increased speed and stability. This also helps when you crash into a tree root or stray road, as the front wheel will lift up slightly to prevent you from hitting it.

Many 3 wheel pushchairs feature air-filled tyres, which means they are able to handle different terrains and are much more flexible than four wheelers. They're also lighter. They are prone to punctures, so you'll require a repair kit and spare inner tube on hand.

They also come with a suspension system that, in her words "smoothes out bumps with great efficiency".

The downside of having bigger wheels is that they can make some buggies quite broad and make it difficult to get through narrow spaces. This could be an issue if you plan to use it for jogging 3 wheel stroller or you need to get through doorways that are narrow while on the move. Fortunately, many models come with small folding options that allow you to remove the front wheels to create more compact storage.

Easy to Manoeuvre

A three-wheeler can be more maneuverable for children. The way in which they are constructed means that the front wheels spin at a whim and are extremely easy to manoeuvre and are ideal for tricky terrain such as parks, cobbles and bumpy pavements as well as dirt tracks.

MFM reviewer Kath tested a 3 wheeler with her infant and toddler and wrote: "The Terrain was a pleasure to navigate over the rough terrain with the swivel rear wheel particularly useful. I was also amazed by the way it handled kerbs with the hand-operated break. I found it extremely steady when I was driving downhill or on uneven ground."

The only drawback to this amazing maneuverability is that the three wheel buggy's bigger wheels sometimes mean that it can struggle in tight spaces - something to consider especially if you live in a metropolitan area. If this is a problem then a four-wheeled buggy might be a better option for you.
